Houston Deco: Houston's Modernistic Architecture
1149 Pearl St., Beaumont
restored
Completed: 1931
Architects: Fred C. Stone and A. Babin
Recorded Texas Historic Landmark, National Register of Historic Places

The 14-story Jefferson County Courthouse was a radical departure in style and form from traditional Texas courthouses. For decades after its completion, this Art Deco building was the only skyscraper courthouse in the state. The county jail was housed on the top floors of the courthouse, instead of in a separate structure as was the usual practice.
