Houston Deco: Houston's Modernistic Architecture
720 Main St. (at Rusk)
demolished
Completed: 1929
Demolished: Unknown
Designers: Taussig & Flesch (New York, Chicago)

In the 1920s and 1930s, designers Taussig & Flesch created elaborate Art Deco interiors for major department stores across the United States and Canada. When the Gulf Building opened in 1929, Sakowitz Bros. specialty store occupied five floors at the corner of Main and Rusk. Sometime after the store moved to a new building in 1951, the retail space was converted into offices. None of the original Sakowitz interiors survive.
